Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, SORMAS was introduced in 2019 and subsequently adapted to support the country’s mission against polio through a specialized digital platform called the Afghanistan Polio Management Information System (APMIS). APMIS builds on SORMAS’s core functions of digital case reporting, real-time data collection and task management to monitor polio vaccination campaigns across the nationwide polio program.

APMIS was first implemented in eastern regions of Afghanistan where polio transmission has historically been most persistent. The platform supports frontline workers and program managers in systematically gathering vaccination data, enabling real-time tracking of campaign coverage, identifying gaps in vaccination reach, and facilitating timely decision-making throughout immunization activities.

The adaptation of SORMAS into APMIS in Afghanistan represents a strategic digitization of polio vaccination campaign monitoring, helping to strengthen the timeliness, completeness, and usability of critical health data in one last remaining polio-endemic settings.
