Côte d’Ivoire

In Côte d’Ivoire, SORMAS was introduced in 2021 to strengthen real‑time digital surveillance and outbreak response capabilities in the country, particularly during the COVID‑19 pandemic. The roll‑out was conducted in two different health regions: the urban area of Abidjan 2 and the rural Gbêkê region, under the coordination of the Institut National d’Hygiène Publique (INHP) with support from international partners as part of the COVID‑19 Outbreak Response combining E‑health, Serolomics, Modelling, Artificial Intelligence and Implementation Research (CORESMA) project.

In these regions, SORMAS was implemented alongside existing national surveillance tools, with the aim of providing fully electronic, integrated notification, case tracking, contact follow‑up and outbreak management capabilities. It enabled health workers, district surveillance officers, laboratory personnel, and decision makers to capture and analyze COVID‑19 case and contact data in a single, standardized platform.

Assessments of the deployment showed that SORMAS was well accepted by users and decision-makers, with high scores for acceptance, usability, and perceived support for epidemic preparedness and early detection of cases. Although additional time was required for dual data entry alongside legacy systems, users reported that SORMAS´s real‑time interface improved their ability to monitor and manage the pandemic and also fostered recognition of its value for wider disease surveillance.
