Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the deployment of SORMAS was carried out in Kwango Province from July 2022 to December 2024 as part of the DIGIPREW (Mobile Digital Preparedness and Response Without Borders) project. Within this project, the system was compared under two implementation models: a facility‑level model, with health workers entering case data directly at health centers, and a health‑zone‑level model, where data entry was centralized at the health zone office.

The assessment of the project showed that facility‑level implementation significantly improved both completeness and timeliness of reporting, with about 46% of cases recorded within one day of consultation compared to only about 5% in the centralized model. SORMAS also captured more cases than the traditional weekly paper‑based epidemiological reporting for epidemic‑prone diseases such as measles, yellow fever, and mpox under the facility‑level approach.

This project demonstrated that SORMAS can strengthen early detection and response in resource‑limited settings like the DRC, especially when implemented directly by health facility staff and supported with appropriate training and infrastructure.
