Nepal
In Nepal SORMAS was introduced in the frame of the EU-funded CORESMA (COVID-19-Outbreak Response combining E-health, Serolomics, Modelling, Artificial Intelligence and Implementation Research) project. Initially deployed in two selected provinces, SORMAS was adapted to support real-time event-based surveillance, case investigation, and coordination of response activities alongside the existing system.
The platform was first deployed in Sudurpaschim and Gandaki Provinces, enabling more timely and structured reporting of unusual health events and infectious disease outbreaks at the subnational level. SORMAS complemented Nepal’s shifting surveillance strategy that aimed to incorporate both indicator-based and event-based mechanisms under a unified framework geared towards early detection and rapid response.
Nepal’s national Community-Based Disease Surveillance guidelines, which integrates community signals with digital reporting tools including SORMAS, was formally endorsed as a national strategy in early 2026. The initiative intends to expand the reach of surveillance beyond health facilities into community and local government levels, strengthening early warning and verification processes across provinces.
The deployment of SORMAS in Nepal is coordinated by the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) of the Ministry of Health and Population, with support from partners including WHO Nepal and others. The national rollout of SORMAS is planned to be completed by 2027.
